Summer is officially here and what other way to start the season but by taking a key west tarpon fishing trip. Key west is located at the end part of the Florida keys island chain and it has a lot to offer to those that are very passionate about fishing. Tarpon fish is very prominent in the area which explains why enthusiasts should give it a try.

Tarpons can gulp air directly hence it can be found both in fresh and sea water. They have a bone hard mouth which makes it very difficult to hook one. Indeed, fishing for tarpons is not a simple thing at all., making it great option to those that are looking for a different adventure or experience and wish to hone their skills at the same time.

In addition to that, tarpons jump and thrash around violently when hooked. This needs one to quickly and accurately manipulate their line. Sometimes enthusiast long to see this moment. Seeing a seven foot fish leap at least ten feet out of the water near to their boat is quite astonishing and something that one have the credit to brag about.

Experts say that an appropriate rig when catching tarpons are those that are five to ten feet of double line, with fifty to eight pounds of five to eight foot mono leader with either a j hook or circle hook at the tip. The hook size will most likely depend on the available bait as well as on the size of the fish one is targeting. J hooks are recommended for those that are trying such activity for the first time.

Hooks could either be a 6/o J or a 9/o circle hook. For beginners, J hooks would be more productive and much more forgiving as well. The size of one's hook will depend on the size fish one is targeting as well as one the bait. Although J hooks are acceptable, circle hooks are highly recommended but only to those who know how to use one.

J hooks are far more forgiving though and are recommended for beginners. Regardless of what hook one is using, it is highly important to keep it sharp. When searching for a good bait, pinfish, live blue crabs and live or dead ballyhoo are encouraged, though a herring or dead sardines could actually be very effective as well.

As soon as you successfully hooked a fish, most often than not it will leap out of the water and probably start thrashing around. Once it gets in the air, immediately make the line slack by dropping the rod tip. Keeping the line tight allows the fish to thrash or shake its head violently, the movement might cause the line to snap.

Despite its difficulty level, all that will be completely rewarded as soon as you see a five to seven feet long fish jump gracefully out of the water. Tarpons however are very bony to eat that's why most enthusiasts throw it back into the water after catching one. This may not make sense to some people however with enthusiasts it could be another story.

Key west tarpon fishing trips no doubt are fun. That is why every enthusiast are encouraged to try this one, at least once.
